1866...When It All Started
ESC is the largest and oldest swimming club in Eastbourne and is proud of its heritage and history.
In 1864 a John Brown started to swim in the sea and was joined by a few other swimmers. In 1866 John Brown proposed that a Swimming Club be formed, John Easter was elected as Hon. Secretary & Treasurer of Eastbourne Swimming Club. Membership was 2 shillings and 6 pence a year (12½p). Eastbourne Pier had yet to be built.
